Women's Soccer Strikes Early, Can't Hold Lead Against Albany

The final game of the regular season saw the Black Bears letting up two unanswered goals.

Box Score ORONO, Maine - The Black Bear's Women's Soccer team remained at home for their second game in a row trying to finish the regular season strong against conference foe Albany on Thursday evening, a night to honor Maine's 2 seniors Riin Emajoe and Hannah Lipinski

The first half remained scoreless as Maine was unable to get a shot on net in the first 45 minutes, while Albany was able to get 4, all saved by Maine Goalkeeper Samantha Cobotic. Corner kicks were even at 4 apiece.

The scoring got started early in the second half as Anetra Byfield took a shot on net which ricocheted off of Albany Goalkeeper Chloe Borasky, and met a waiting Vivien Beil at the top of the box, who aimed her shot and blasted it into the net in the 49th minute. Maine led 1-0 early in the second.

Maine would hold that lead for about 9 minutes when Albany struck back for the first time; on a corner from Caitlyn Paltsios, Meghan Malone found the back of the net by way of a header in the 58th minute to tie the game at 1-all.

The tie lasted for most of the rest of the second half but ended with a sequence of passes within the Maine 18, which eventually found Meghan Cavanaugh who buried it in the opposite corner of the net to take the lead for Albany, which would end up being the game winner in the 83rd minute for an Albany victory.

Maine Goalkeeper Samantha Cobotic stopped 9 of 11 shots faced in the contest as her record falls to 3-5-0, while Albany's Borasky improves to 6-4-1.

Maine now waits to see the results of America East play this weekend to see if they make the playoffs; they currently sit in 5th place in America East, but there is one more day of games remaining.
