NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- The University of Maine field hockey team edged Yale in overtime by a score of 3-2 on Sunday afternoon. Jocelyn Mitchell (Kanata, Ontario) recorded the unassisted game-winner for Maine who picks up its fourth win in a row and moves to 6-2 on the season. With the loss, the Bulldogs fall to 4-2.
Yale jumped out to a 1-0 lead at the 19:05 mark when Chelsey Locarno received a pass from Dinah Landshut off a corner play. Locarno snuck a shot by Maine goalkeeper Brittany Fleck (Vancouver, British Columbia) to give Yale the early lead.
The Black Bears would even things up 13:19 into the second half. Maine's first goal came when junior Stephanie Gardiner (Vancouver, British Columbia) found fellow junior Kelly Newton (Vancouver, British Columbia). Newton settled the pass and fired a shot into the back of the Bulldog cage to knot the game at one goal each.
Yale would regain the lead at 57:08. The Bulldogs would set up their penalty corner as Mia Rosati worked the ball to Landshut. Landshut settled and found Taylor Sankovich who notched the goal to put Yale up 2-1.
The Black Bears would tie things back up just over three minutes later with a penalty corner goal of their own. Freshman Alexa Binnendijk (Den Haag, Holland) created the play but it was again Newton who finished for her second goal of the contest to tie the score at 2-2.
Mitchell would break the tie for good 5:41 into overtime as she broke in on Bulldog goalkeeper Katie Bolling and beat her for the unassisted, game-winner. The goal gave Maine the victory, 3-2, and was the Black Bears' fourth win in a row.
Fleck was again strong in the cage for Maine, making 10 saves and improving her season record to 6-1. Bolling was also solid in the cage for Yale, making 14 saves of her own but taking the tough loss and falling to 3-2 on the season.
The Black Bears return to action Friday at 5 p.m. when they host Quinnipiac University at the Maine Field Hockey Complex.
