Mitchell Hat Trick Leads Field Hockey to 6-1 Win Over Quinnipiac

ORONO, Maine--The University of Maine field hockey team defeated Quinnipiac by the score of 6-1 on Friday evening at the Maine Field Hockey Complex. Maine improves to 7-2 on the season while Quinnipiac falls to 2-6. Maine was led by Jocelyn Mitchell (Kanata, Ontario) who notched a hat trick.
Mitchell kicked off the scoring just 19 seconds into the game, when she tipped in a Stephanie Gardiner (Vancouver, British Columbia) shot to notch her eighth goal of the season.
Mitchell would score her second of the game when Brittney Cummings (Belfast, Maine) found her open by the near post for the easy tip-in.
She completed the hat trick when she put in a rebound 14:27 into the first half to give Maine a 3-0 lead.
Gardiner gave Maine a four-goal lead off a corner when she rocketed one past the Quinnipiac goalie. Mallory Anderson (Hampton Falls, N.H.) and Alexa Binnendijk (Den Haag, Holland) assisted on the goal.
Gardiner notched her second goal of the game when she used some nice stick work to maneuver around the defense and beat the goalie a couple of minutes into the second half.
After a Quinnipiac goal, Courtney Veinotte (Canaan, Maine) finished the scoring when she beat the keeper off a rebound from the near post.
Brittany Fleck (Vancouver, British Columbia) and Alicia Frisch (Calgary, Alberta) combined to make three saves while Quinnipiac goalie Nicole Lewis made six saves.
Before the game, Maine and Quinnipiac wore pink t-shirts and held a raffle to raise money and awareness for breast cancer.
Maine returns to action on Oct. 1 when they Black Bears host New Hampshire in their first America East game of the season.
