Alfie Michaud

Alfie Michaud enters his 11th season on the University of Maine men's ice hockey staff in 2026-27. A member of Maine's 1999 NCAA National Championship team, Michaud originally joined the Black Bears as a volunteer goaltending coach in 2016-17 before being promoted to a full-time assistant coach prior to the 2017-18 season.

At Maine
Michaud has played an integral role in Maine's return to national prominence, helping guide the Black Bears to consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances in 2024 and 2025 and the program's first Hockey East Tournament championship in 20 years during the 2024-25 season.

Michaud has mentored two All-American goaltenders and three Mike Richter Award semifinalists – and one award winner – during his tenure in Orono.

Under Michaud's guidance in 2024-25, goaltender Albin Boija earned Second Team All-America honors and was named a Mike Richter Award finalist after helping lead the Black Bears to a 24-win season, the Hockey East Tournament title and an NCAA Tournament appearance. Jeremy Swayman earned First Team All-America honors and captured the Mike Richter Award in 2020, with Swayman also taking home the national honor as college hockey's top goaltender. Additionally, in 2022-23, goaltender Victor Ostman was named a Mike Richter Award semifinalist. Boija and Ostman were also tabbed as Hockey East Second Team All-Stars.

During Michaud's first season as a full-time assistant coach in 2017-18, Swayman arrived in Orono as a freshman and went on to become one of the most decorated goaltenders in program history. Under Michaud's mentorship, Swayman earned Hockey East All-Rookie Team honors and collected numerous conference awards throughout his career, including:

• Six Hockey East weekly awards and one Hockey East Rookie of the Month honor during the 2017-18 season
• Hockey East Pro Ambitions All-Rookie Team selection
• Four Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week honors during the 2018-19 season
• Hockey East Third Team All-Star recognition in 2018-19
• Three Hockey East weekly awards and one Hockey East Goaltender of the Month honor during the 2019-20 season
• Walter Brown Award winner
• Hockey East Player of the Year
• Hockey East Goaltender of the Year
• Hockey East First Team All-Star
• First Team All-American
• Mike Richter Award recipient
• Hobey Baker Award finalist

Swayman became the first goaltender in Maine history to be named Hockey East Player of the Year and finished his career as one of the most accomplished players in program history.

Michaud has also contributed to the development of numerous Black Bear standouts as a member of Maine's coaching staff, including defenseman Brandon Holt, who earned First Team All-America honors in 2025-26 and became the program's first First Team All-American defenseman since 1999.

Playing Career & Education
As a student-athlete, Michaud helped lead Maine to its second NCAA National Championship in 1999. He was named the NCAA Frozen Four Most Outstanding Player and earned NCAA All-Tournament Team honors following the championship run. He also earned Hockey East All-Tournament Team recognition in 1998.

Following his graduation from the University of Maine in 1999, Michaud spent parts of 16 seasons playing professionally, including stints in the National Hockey League with the Vancouver Canucks and in the American Hockey League with the Syracuse Crunch and Manitoba Moose.

Beyond his playing career, Michaud has built an extensive coaching and player development résumé. Since 2010, he has owned and operated Dream Catcher's Hockey, providing private instruction and clinics for goaltenders and hockey players. He served as head coach of the U18 Portland Junior Pirates before being named goaltending coach for the Portland Pirates in 2014. Following his time with Portland's AHL club, Michaud founded RISE Sport Testing, a developmental testing agency serving schools and athletes across multiple sports.

Michaud is also a member of the NHL Native Alumni Association.
