Hanscom elevated to Assistant Athletic Director for Marketing & Fan Engagement

ORONO, Maine – University of Maine officials have announced that Tom Hanscom has been elevated to the role of assistant athletic director for marketing & fan engagement.

Hanscom, who served as the assistant director of athletics marketing from Aug. 2023 to April of 2026, oversees all aspects of the department's strategic marketing, fan engagement, sponsorship activation, and game presentation.

Hanscom transitioned to the Assistant Director of Marketing role after serving as the Director of Football Operations at UMaine since the fall of 2021.

A 2019 graduate of the University of Maine, earning a bachelor's degree in economics, Hanscom has been a part of Maine Athletics since 2017 when he joined the football program as a student manager and game film operator. After graduation, Hanscom accepted the role as a video coordinator with Maine Football.

Following the 2020 season, Hanscom served as the Pro Shop Manager at Penobscot Valley Country Club (PVCC) in Orono, managing all aspects of the pro shop, restaurant marketing, and social media strategies. During his time at PVCC, Hanscom served as the head coach for the Orono High School golf team, leading the team to its first Maine State Championship in his first year in 2020. In his second season, a senior on the team won the Girls Individual State Championship under his leadership.

Hanscom returned to UMaine in 2021 when he was hired as the Director of Football Operations. Head Coach Jordan Stevens retained Hanscom on staff when he arrived on campus as the head coach of Maine Football that December and Hanscom worked under him until August of 2023, when he took the position of Assistant Director of Athletics Marketing.

In his role as assistant director of athletics marketing, Hanscom directly impacted a steady increase in student attendance at football, men's and women's basketball, and men's and women's ice hockey games through the 2024 and 2025 school years. He also became the advisor for the Maine-iak student hockey fan group as they carried out the process of becoming an official student organization on the UMaine campus.

Hanscom started a second stint as the head coach of the Orono High School golf team in 2025, with a plan to continue coaching throughout the 2026 fall season and beyond.

Hanscom is from Orrington, Maine and his parents and younger brother are all graduates of UMaine.
