DELAND, Fla. – The University of Maine softball team opened up the Hatter Classic, falling to North Dakota State and Stetson.

The Black Bears will return to action tomorrow, once again facing the Bison and the Hatters on the second day of the Hatter Classic.

How it Happened
- The Bison threatened early, loading the bases in the home half of the first before Alysen Rieth got out of the jam with a lineout and a strikeout.
- Francesca Guerrera led off the fourth with a single up the middle … two walks loaded the bases for Maine and then Morgan Pool and Peyton Archer earned back-to-back RBI walks … Anna Carlson's double to right center then cleared the bases for a 5-0 lead.
- NDSU responded in the bottom of the fifth, plating six runs to take the lead … the Bison then added a cushion with a three-run sixth.
- Guerrera reached in the top of the seventh but NDSU closed out for the win.
Game Notes
- Rieth started for Maine, going 5.0 innings while giving up eight runs – four earned – and allowing four walks and striking out one … Hannah Hipwell pitched 1.0 innings in relief, giving up one run on two hits.
- Carlson was 1-for-4 with a double and three RBI
- Annika Shearer, Guerrera and Eviana Robles also tallied hits for Maine.

How it Happened
- Maine took a 1-0 lead in the opening stanza when Guerrera reached on an error and came around on a Shearer single through the left side.
- Stetson responded with two runs in the bottom of the first and then pushed across two more an inning later for a 4-1 lead through two frames.
- The Hatters tacked on one in the third and two in the fourth to stretch the lead to 7-1 through four frames … the hosts capped the scoring with
Game Notes
- Ava Zettlemoyer started, throwing 3.0 innings … the senior allowed five runs – three earned – while walking five and striking out three.
- Kyla Brogan threw 1.0 innings of relief, allowing five runs – three earned and walking two.
- Eviana Robles and Shearer both went 1-for-2 with Shearer adding an RBI.
