Preview: Women’s Ice Hockey Set to Host UVM Friday, UNH Saturday for Annual ‘Fill the Steins Game’ and Senior Day

ORONO, Maine - The University of Maine women's ice hockey team will play two home games this weekend at Alfond Arena on Feb 13/14. On Friday, Maine will face off against the University of Vermont Catamounts at 2:00 PM. On Saturday, Maine will host the University of New Hampshire for the annual 'Fill the Steins' game and Senior Day. The Buffalo Wild Wings Border Battle is set for a 1:00 PM puck drop on Saturday.

Black Bears' Last Time Out:

  • Maine most recently faced #5 Northeastern on Thursday, where they fell 5-1 on the road. Isabelle Michaud scored Maine's lone goal. 
  • On Saturday, Maine downed Boston University 2-0. Kiia Lahtinen recorded her fourth career shutout with 17 saves and Stephanie Jacob netted two goals in the win. Paige Fong tallied two assists on Saturday while Gracie Hanson and Brenna Curl each put up one assist.

More on Maine:

  • Maine killed off four of their six penalties this past weekend, and scored two powerplay goals on 11 attempts. 
  • With her two-goal game on Saturday, Stephanie Jacob now leads the squad in goals (10) and points (15). Rookie Isabelle Michaud is tied with Jacob 15 points (8-7-15).
  • Maine is currently tied for 6th in the Hockey East standings with Vermont.

Scouting the Vermont Catamounts:

  • Last month, Maine lost to (2-1) and tied (2-2) Vermont. Since then, Vermont has beat Boston University three times, and lost to Providence College twice, and Northeastern once in overtime.
  • Stella Retrum leads Vermont in points with 25 total (12-13-25), followed by Lauren O'Hara who has 20 (5-15-20).
  • Rookie goaltender Lily Prendergast started both games last weekend earning her first career win and an overtime loss to #5 Northeastern.
  • Vermont is last in the conference for penalty kill percentage (72.9%), but second overall on the powerplay (22.1%) in Hockey East action.

Scouting the UNH Wildcats:

  • Back in December, Maine beat UNH 4-3 in overtime and tied 2-2, to earn three conference points.
  • The Wildcats are currently on a three-game streak after beating #7 UConn, Merrimack, and #13 Holy Cross. Junior goaltender Noemi Martinez has played in all three wins.
  • Five players have 20 or more points this season: Nina Rossi (11-18-29), Danika Botterill (11-14-25), Alyson Hush (10-15-25), Kelly Harty (15-6-21), and Josie Linn (8-12-20).
  • Ahead of Saturday's Border Battle, UNH faces #6 UConn again Friday, Feb 13.=
