Whaley elevated to Director of Sports Performance

ORONO, Maine – University of Maine officials have announced that Austin Whaley has been elevated to the role of director of sports performance.

Whaley, who previously served as the associate director of sports performance at UMaine since July 2024, will continue to work directly with the men's basketball and field hockey programs while overseeing the day-to-day operations of the sports performance unit.

"I'm grateful for the opportunity to take on a new role and to further contribute to the advancement of the sports performance department here at UMaine," Whaley said. "Go Black Bears!"

Prior to his time at Maine, Whaley served stints at Southeastern Louisiana University, Saint Anselm College, and the University of Texas at San Antonio.

As assistant strength and conditioning coach at Southeastern Louisiana University from May 2022 to July 2024, Whaley administered the strength and conditioning programs for men's and women's basketball, volleyball, and beach volleyball.

During the 2021-22 seasons, Whaley served as a graduate assistant with the Saint Anselm strength and conditioning department where he worked closely with the women's tennis and cross country programs.

Whaley began his career as an intern at the University of Texas at San Antonio where he assisted with the day-to-day strength and conditioning operations with the football, men's basketball, and women's basketball teams.

Whaley graduated from Colby-Sawyer College in 2021 with a bachelor of science degree in exercise science before obtaining his master of science degree in exercise science from Merrimack College in 2022. Whaley played four seasons of varsity basketball at Colby-Sawyer.
