Maine splits non-conference doubleheader at Stonehill

Gabby Papushka and Francesca Guerrera each had five-hit days.

ORONO, Maine – The University of Maine softball team split a non-conference doubleheader at Stonehill on Tuesday afternoon at Fr. Gartland Field.

How it Happened
  • The Skyhawks jumped out to an 8-0 lead through two innings, putting up three runs in the first and six runs in the second.
  • Maine cut into the deficit in the top of the third inning … Francesca Guerrera led off the inning with a single and scored two batters later … Gabby Papushka then sent a three-run shot over the center field fence to make it a four-run game … Guerrera drove an RBI single through the left side and then Abby Rhee's infield hit pushed one more across for an 8-6 score line.
  • Papushka led off the fourth frame with a solo home run to pull Maine within one …
  • In the top of fifth inning, Rhee again drove in a run to make it 8-8 but Stonehill retook a one-run lead in the bottom half.
  • Keira Inman's two-run home run to right field put Maine back on top in the sixth and then Papushka's RBI single up the middle in the top of the seventh gave Maine the 11-9 final.
Game Notes
  • Madison Simmerman started, throwing 1.2 innings while Ava Zettlemoyer went 2.2 innings and Alysen Rieth went 2.2 innings in earning the win.
  • Gabby Papushka went 3-for-3 with two home runs, five RBI and three runs scored … it marked her first career multi-home run game.
  • Papushka's five RBI marked the most by a Maine player since Kya Enos had six in Feb. 19, 2022 … it was the first multi-home run game by a Black Bear since Kelby Drews on April 27, 2022.
  • Abby Rhee was 1-for-2 with three walks and two RBI.
  • Keira Inman was 3-for-5 with two RBI and one home run.
  • Francesca Guerrera was 3-for-5 with one RBI and one run scored.
  • Eight total Black Bears registered a hit.

How it Happened
  • Stonehill took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first to kick start a cat and mouse game … Maine equalized in the top of the second and then Stonehill went back up, 2-1, in the bottom of the second.
  • Maine tied things up in the top of the third only to see the Skyhawks plate three runs in the bottom of the third to
  • In the top of the fourth, two Maine runs cut the deficit to 5-4 but Stonehill pushed it back out to 6-4 in the home half.
  • The Black Bears got one run back in the fifth when Keira Inman led off with a triple before scoring on a Madison Hand sacrifice fly … Maine loaded the bases in the top of the seventh and got one run across but Stonehill held on for the 7-6 win.
