Retrievers take two from Black Bears in America East action

Maine fell in both ends of a doubleheader.

ORONO, Maine – The University of Maine softball dropped both ends of an America East doubleheader to UMBC on Saturday afternoon at the Pierre & Catherine Labat Softball Complex.

How it Happened
  • Gabby Papushka's double in the bottom of the first drove in Bailey Snowberger for a 1-0 lead that would hold until the fourth.
  • UMBC tied things up in the fourth with a double and then took a 2-1 lead in the fifth on an RBI single.
  • The Black Bears responded in the home half of the fifth when Francesca Guerrera singled through the right side.
  • In the eighth inning, Jolie Torrens' pinch hit home run put the Retrievers up 4-2 and UMBC held on for the extra innings victory.

How it Happened
  • UMBC took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second and then added single runs in the third and fourth innings for a 3-0 lead that would last until the top of the sixth.
  • The Retrievers then put three runs across in the sixth inning … the bottom half of the second saw Bailey Snowberger drive in Eviana Robles with a single up the middle to get the Black Bears on the board.
  • UMBC closed out the game for the 6-1 final.
Game Notes
  • Ava Zettlemoyer started, throwing 4.0 innings while giving up three runs on two hits … Alysen Rieth threw 3.0 innings of relief, allowing three runs on four hits … both pitchers recorded three strikeouts.
  • Bailey Snowberger was 1-for-3 with one RBI.
 
Up Next
  • Maine will wrap up non-conference play with a doubleheader at Stonehill on Tuesday, April 8.
  • The Black Bears will then return home next weekend to host Binghamton for a three-game series on Saturday, April 12 and Sunday, April 13.
