Baseball Falls in Series Opener against UMBC

Sargent Plates Seven Runs in Losing Effort

Orono, ME – The University of Maine baseball team fell to UMBC on Friday afternoon.

Black Bear Scoring Breakdown:

Maine got on the board in second inning as Myles Sargent plated three runs on a double to left field, scoring Aidan Bardi (BB), Payton Whitehead (1B) and Evan Menzel (BB).

Brody Rasmussen hit a solo home run in the third inning, his fifth home run of the season.

Payton Whitehead hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning, his sixth of the year. Dean O'Neill (1B) scored on the play.

O'Neill drove in a pair of runs just one inning later as he singled home both Sargent (1B) and Evan Baschnagel (PR).

Sargent capped off the night with a grand slam in the bottom of the ninth, scoring Drew Reynolds (2B), Menzel (HBP) and Quinn Murphy (BB). The home run was his seventh of the season and second grand slam of the season. Sargent's 7 RBIs on the afternoon tied his career-high, which he set back on March 27th at NJIT.

Black Bear Pitchers:

Colin Fitzgerald went 6 innings on Friday afternoon, allowing 7 runs on 10 hits, 2 walks and striking out a career-best 10.

Jason Libby (0-4) got tagged with the loss in relief as he allowed 6 runs (1 earned) on 3 hits and a walk in 2/3 of an inning.

Owen Wheeler pitched 1/3 of an inning, allowed 1 unearned run on 2 hits and 1 strikeout.

Pierce Friedman allowed 2 runs on 1 hit, 3 walks and 3 strikeouts in 2 innings of relief.

UMBC Recap:

UMBC scored two runs in the first, three in the third, one in the fifth, one in the sixth, seven in the seventh (6 unearned) and two in the ninth.

Brady Fox (1-3) picked up the win in relief.
