Orono, ME - The University of Maine basketball program picked up their first post season win since 2005 on Saturday night as they defeated UMass Lowell.
The River Hawks jumped out to an early 7-point lead just over 3 minutes into the game before it Maine found their rhythm on both ends of the floor, taking the lead with 7:58 remaining in the first half on a
Jaden Clayton layup.
The Black Bears would never relinquish that lead for the rest of the game, starting off with a five-point lead at halftime.
AJ Lopez and
Quion Burns both had 8 points in the half.
Kellen Tynes had 7 points, 3 assists and 2 rebounds. Clayton had 6 points.
The Black Bears began building up their lead to double-digits as they lead by as much as 13 points with 4:39 remaining in the game.
Maine ended up picking up the win, 72-64, their first playoff victory since the 2004-05 season.
Tynes paced the Black Bears with 20 points, 6 assists, 5 rebounds and 3 steals, all of which were team-high's on the night.
Lopez (16), Clayton (16) and Burns (11) all scored in double-digits on the night.
Maine forced 14 turnovers on the night while only having 8 of their own. The Black Bears also rejected 7 shots on the night, 6 of which were in the second half.
The Black Bears continue their playoff run on Tuesday, March 11 as they travel to Vermont for the America East Semfinals, presented by Jersey Mike's. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 PM.
