Vestel, NY – The University of Maine baseball team was swept on Saturday in a weather shortened series at Binghamton.
GAME ONE:
Black Bears Scoring Breakdown:
Maine got off to a fast start on the afternoon as they hit back-to-back home runs in the top of the first frame, starting off with a two-run shot from
Drew Reynolds, his second of the season.
Brody Rasmussen (1B) scored on the play.
Dean O'Neill followed Reynolds by launching a solo shot just two pitches later, this one being his fifth of the season and second-straight day with a home run.
Rasmussen scored the fourth run of the day for Maine in the third inning of the third home run of the day for the Black Bears. His solo shot was his fourth of the season.
Evan Menzel kept the home run party going for Maine as he hit the fourth home run for the Black Bears of the game, his first collegiate home run. His home run was a solo shot to right field.
Myles Sargent made it five Black Bear home runs as he hit a solo shot in the top of the fifth frame, his third of the season.
Down to their final out of the game,
Quinn Murphy delivered a game-tying two-run double that he hit to right-center, scoring
Drew Reynolds (2B) and
Chris Bear (1B).
Black Bear Pitchers:
Caleb Leys got the start in the first game of the doubleheader but lasted only 2 innings, allowing 3 unearned runs on 2 hits, 4 walks and 3 strikeouts.
Luc Lavigueur was called on to begin the third inning as he went 1 and 2/3 innings of work, allowing 1 run on 2 hits and 4 walks.
Owen Wheeler was called on with the bases loaded in the fourth frame and two outs, in which he stranded all three runners on. Wheeler ended up allowing 4 runs on 4 hits, 1 walk and 1 strikeout in his 1 inning of work.
Tommy Martin (0-1) made a relief appearance for the second-straight game as he got tagged with the loss as he allowed 1 run on 2 hits, 3 walks (one intentional) and 2 strikeouts.
Binghamton Recap:
Binghamton scored three unearned runs in the first, one in the third, four in the fifth and one in the seventh.
Chris Sleeper (1-0) picked up the win in relief.

Payton Whitehead got Maine on the board in the third inning as he hit a two-run single to center field, scoring O'Neill (2B) and

Reynolds hit an RBI double to left field in the fifth inning, scoring
Aidan Bardi (HBP) on the play.
Black Bear Pitchers:
Gianni Gambardella (1-1) got the start in game two as he allowed 7 runs on 9 hits, 1 walk and 1 strikeout in his 3 and 2/3 innings of work.
Jason Libby was the lone reliever used in the weather shortened game as he pitched just a 1/3 of an inning, allowing 5 hits and 1 run.
Binghamton Recap:
