Ruston, LA – The University of Maine baseball team fell in extra innings on Sunday afternoon at LA Tech.
Black Bears Scoring Breakdown:
Payton Whitehead brought home the opening run of the contest in the first inning as he hit a sac-fly to right field, scoring
Chris Bear (1B).
Whitehead made it a multi-RBI day as he hit a double to right center in the third inning, scoring
Brody Rasmussen (1B). One pitch later,
Quinn Murphy hit a single through the right side to score
Drew Reynolds (BB).
The Black Bears kept the line moving in the third inning as
Will Burns brought home Whitehead (2B) on a groundout to first base before
Evan Baschnagel hit an infield single to score Murphy (1B).
Myles Sargent opened up the fifth inning with the first home run of the season for the Black Bears, a no-doubt, solo shot to right field.
Chris Bear recorded an RBI groundout later in the fifth frame that scored
Will Burns (2B).
Murphy drove home his second run of the day as he hit an RBI single up the middle that scored Reynolds (HBP).
Black Bear Pitchers:
Gabe Gifford made his first start of the season, in which he went 5 complete innings, allowing 6 runs (5 earned) on 4 hits, 5 walks and 4 strikeouts.
Vaun Larisa made his Black Bear debut on Sunday, where he allowed 1 run on 2 hits and 1 strikeout in 2 innings of relief work.
Sebastian Holt (0-1) began the eighth inning on the mound for Maine and ended up taking the loss in extra innings as he allowed 2 runs on 5 hits and 1 walk in 2 and 2/3 innings of work.
LA Tech Recap:
Scored four runs (one unearned) in the first, two in the second, one in the seventh, one in eighth and one in the 10
th.
Blake Hooks (1-0) picked up the win in relief.
