HAMDEN, Conn. -- The University of Maine women's basketball team, which trailed by as many as 11 at Quinnipiac, battled back to earn a 63-55 victory over the Bobcats on Sunday afternoon.
Maine, which outscored Quinnipiac 40-25 in the second half, was led by
Adrianna Smith who registered 18 points and a career-high 20 rebounds. Smith tallied her seventh double-double of the season and moved into seventh on Maine's all-time rebounding list.
Asta Blauenfeldt added 15 points while
Lala Woods, making her collegiate debut, chipped in eight points off the bench.
The Black Bears shot 45.3 percent from the floor, hitting 7-of-19 triples, and won the rebounding battle by a 38-35 margin.Â
In a game which featured six lead changes and seven ties, Maine led 13-10 after one but was outscored 20-10 in the second quarter and found itself trailing 30-23 at the break.
The Black Bears trailed by 11 early in the third quarter before going on a 10-0 run. Consecutive triples by
Olivia Alvarez and Smith trimmed the deficit to three before Blauenfeldt's fastbreak layup brought Maine back to within one.
Quinnipiac answered with a 7-0 run, racing its lead back out to eight.
Maine would end the third quarter strong, posting a 6-0 run to close out the period. A triple by Woods and an old fashioned three-point play by Smith drew Maine back to within a pair moving to the fourth quarter.
Blauenfeldt opened the fourth with a layup to tie the game before Quinnipiac answered with a bucket. Woods knocked down another triple to give Maine the lead, 48-47, with 7:34 left in regulation.
Two more ties would follow before Blauenfeldt's clutch three put Maine on top, 55-52, with just over two minutes remaining.
Quinnipiac answered with a three of their own for the games seventh tie, before Smith's driving layup from the top of the key put Maine back up, 57-55.Â
Smith's layup would begin an 8-0 run to close out the game for the Black Bears who earned their first road win of the season, 63-55.
Maine returns to action when it closes out non-conference play on Dec. 21 at Harvard.
