Smith helps Maine push past Harvard at the buzzer

Smith finishes with 21 points

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Adrianna Smith's buzzer beater at the end of regulation helps Maine push past Harvard University on Sunday afternoon by a score of 59-57.

Adrianna Smith led the way for the Black Bears with a 21 point, 8 rebound, and 7 assist performance. Asta Blauenfeldt also finished in double figures with 13 points, while Lala Woods (9), Sarah Talon (7), Olivia Alvarez (7), and Lizzy Gruber (2) all contributed in the scoring column.

The Black Bears went into the second quarter down 13-10 after shooting just 26.7% from the floor in the first. Maine would then find their shooting form going 19-38 throughout the rest of the contest.

Maine would end the contest shooting 43.4% from the field, 33.3% from beyond the arc and 46.2% from the free throw line.

Maine would be outrebounded by the Crimson by a 43-30 margin. This game would see 30 lead changes, seeing 15 changes for each team in the contest.

Maine would go down 6-0 early to start the contest and Asta Blauenfeldt would open the scoring for Maine with a three pointer. Adrianna Smith would tack on a layup to make it 6-5 midway through the first.

Adrianna Smith and Sarah Talon would combine for seven points to open up the second quarter as Maine would tie their largest lead of the contest of four.

The Black Bears and the Crimson would trade shots throughout the rest of the second quarter which would lead to the Black Bears being down three heading into the half time break.

Maine would open the second half scoring with a Lizzy Gruber layup 18 seconds into the quarter and a Sarah Talon layup at the 1:17 mark of the thrid quarter.

Maine and Harvard would once again trade leads throughout the third and Harvard would end the first 30 minutes with a one point lead entering the fourth.

Maine would be down as much as four points with 7:55 remaining in the contest. The Black Bears would continue to battle leads throughout the remainder of the contest.

An Asta Blauenfeldt three pointer would find the bottom of the basket to tie things up at 56 with 2:04 remaining. 

Adrianna Smith would head to the line with 43 seconds remaining to give Maine a 57-56 lead.

Harvard would respond at the free throw stripe with 26 seconds left.

Adrianna Smith would continue her heroics getting a putback layup to go off of a missed shot as time expires to give Maine the victory.

The Black Bears now enter the winter break and will be back in action on January 1st at UMass Lowell to open up the America East schedule.
