Black Bears Pick up First Win of the Season at Boston University

Biel led the way with 17 points

Boston, MA. – The University of Maine basketball team picked up their first win of the season as they took down Boston University, 69-59.
 
Maine jumped out to an early 8-2 lead as TJ Biel scored six early points on the night to propel the Black Bears in front.
 
Maine continued their early surge as they knocked down four of their first five three-pointers as a team to take a 19-10 lead heading into the second media timeout of the first half.
 
The Black Bears got their first half lead up to double-digits on a three by Ace Flagg and later took an 11-point lead on an and-one by Caleb Crawford.
 
A late bucket by Boston University made it a nine-point lead at halftime for Maine at 33-24.
 
Biel led all scorers with nine points while eight different Black Bears scored in the first half.
 
Maine held Boston University to just 27.6% shooting from the field and 17.6% from three-point range.
 
Boston University opened the second half on a 11-2 run over the first three and a half minutes to tie up the contest at 35-35.
 
The Black Bears responded by scoring the nine of the next 12 points to get back out to a six-point advantage with 13 minutes to play.
 
The Black Bears continued to slowly build their lead up as it got as high as 12 points with just over eight minutes to go.
 
Maine went on to pick up the victory, their first of the season, by a final score of 69-59.
 
Notes:
  • Biel led the Black Bears with 17 points on 7-for-11 shooting and 2-for-3 from three-point range.
  • Keelan Steele had eight points and six rebounds while Mekhi Gray had 10 points and a pair of assists.
  • Carey had 14 points, three rebounds and two assists.
  • Eight different Black Bears recorded a steal in the win.
  • Maine held Boston University to 35.7% from the field and 25.7% from three-point range.
  • Maine forced 15 turnovers on the night.
 
The Black Bears (1-11) return to Orono to take on Canisius on Saturday, Dec. 13. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 PM and limited tickets will go on sale on Friday, Dec. 12.
