BURLINGTON, Vt. -- After a scoreless 80 minutes of action, the University of Maine field hockey team and Vermont entered a shootout in the America East semifinal round. The Catamounts capitalized on three of four attempts in the shootout while
Eloise Penty registered the lone made attempt for Maine as the Catamounts captured the shootout, 3-1, to advance to the America East Championship.
Each team was denied a penalty stroke attempt in the first half. Vermont's Alicia Battistelli was turned away by Rozárie Mrázová, 7:12 into the first quarter, to keep the game scoreless.Â
Penty's penalty stroke try, 6:45 into the second quarter, was saved by Merle Vaandrager as the game entered the half tied at 0-0.
Neither team was able to find the back of the cage throughout the second half and two overtime periods as the game moved into a shootout where the Catamounts came out on top, 3-1.
Maine held a 9-5 edge in shots on goal and a 9-5 edge in penalty corner tries.Â
Mrázová made five saves in the cage for the Black Bears.
