Preview: Field Hockey opens postseason play at UMass Lowell

Black Bears making their 17th consecutive appearance in America East postseason

ORONO, Maine -- The University of Maine field hockey team earned the No. 5 seed in the America East postseason tournament and will travel to take on No. 4 UMass Lowell on Sunday at noon. The appearance marks Maine's 17th consecutive showing in the league's postseason play.

The Black Bears, who won their last postseason conference title in 2021, carry a 12-25 all-time mark in America East tournament play into Sunday's first round meeting. A year ago, Maine defeated UC Davis in the quarterfinal round before dropping a 5-3 decision to New Hampshire in the league's semifinals. UMass Lowell is 0-6 all-time in postseason play. This meeting will mark the first postseason meeting between Maine and UMass Lowell.

Maine and UMass Lowell last met just over a week ago (10/24) in a game won 3-2 by the River Hawks in Orono. Maine controlled much of the play, holding a 16-11 edge in shots and an 8-5 advantage in penalty corners. Zoe Furber and Saylor Kuefler each scored for Maine in the loss while Rozarie Mrazova made five saves in the cage.

ABOUT MAINE:
  • Saylor Kuefler leads Maine with 20 points on the season with five goals and a team-high 10 assists. Zoe Furber guides Maine's goal scorers with eight on the year to go along with three assists for 19 points. Eloise Penty is also adding 19 points on seven goals and five assists.
  • Rozárie Mrázová, who has posted shutouts in two of her last four outings, has four wins on the season to go along with a 1.97 goals against average and a 0.766 save percentage. Mrázová ranks third in the America East in goals against average, second in save percentage, and third in saves per game. 
  • Kuefler is currently riding a six-game point scoring streak with 11 points in her last six outings. She ranks second in the America Eas tat 0.67 assists per game.

ABOUT UMASS LOWELL:
  • The River Hawks, 4-6 at home this season, have lost four of their last five with the lone win being the victory over Maine. 
  • Karlijn Kerkhof leads UMass Lowell's offense with team-highs in goals (13), assists (7), and points (33). She ranks third in the America East in both points per game and goals per game. Madison Leeper is adding six goals and six assists for 18 points.
  • Veerle Mous is 7-9 in the cage this season with a pair of shutouts to go along with a 0.681 save percentage and a 3.12 goals against average. Mous, who has made 109 saves on the season, ranks first in the conference at 6.41 saves per game.
