Olivia Rockwood led the Black Bears (7-9, 2-1 AE) with 20 points in a 69-59 loss at Binghamton (10-6, 2-1) on Thursday evening. The loss snaps Maine's 11-game win streak against the Bearcats.
Rockwood finished the evening 7-of-13 from the floor with six triples.
Paula Gallego and
Caroline Dotsey joined Rockwood in double-figures, each posting 10 points in the contest.
Asta Blauenfeldt added seven points and five assists.
Maine, which shot 22-of-60 from the floor with nine triples, controlled the boards by a 35-24 margin including 16 offensive rebounds.
Binghamton jumped out to a 10-4 lead before Maine answered with a 9-1 run to take its first lead of the evening. A triple from Blauenfeldt drew Maine within one. Rockwood answered the Binghamton triple with two of her own, putting Maine on top by one with 3:34 left in the first.
Maine would gain its largest lead of the night just minutes later when another triple by Rockwood gave the visitors a 20-16 edge.
The Black Bears carried three-point cushion after one.
The teams would trade the lead five times in the second quarter.
Maine ran its lead back out to four on an offensive rebound putback from Dotsey with 6:05 on the clock.
A 7-2 run from the Bearcats put the hosts back on top, 30-29.
Binghamton stretched its lead to four before four-straight points from Blauenfeldt knotted the game at 33-all with less than a minute left in the half.
The Bearcats took a 35-33 lead into the break.
Binghamton would outscore Maine 21-15 in the third quarter to stretch its advantage.
Maine tied the game at 39-39 on another three from Rockwood before Binghamton responded, this time with a 7-0 run, to push the lead out to 46-39.
The Black Bears answered, piecing together a 5-0 run on a second chance driving layup from Gallego and a triple by
Sera Hodgson. The sprint cut the lead to a pair with 4:50 left in the third.
Binghamton's lead grew to 56-48 after three quarters.
Maine continued to fight, opening the fourth on a 7-0 run on a triple from Christopher and a short jumper by Gallego off a turnover. Rockwood's offensive putback brought Maine back within one, 56-55.
Shortly after, Gallego's turnaround jumper once again tied the game, this time at 57-57, with 5:28 on the clock.
However, Maine was unable to break the tie and take the lead the rest of the way.
Binghamton closed the game with a 12-2 run to capture the victory, 69-59.
Maine returns to action on Saturday when it travels to meet first-place UAlbany at 2 p.m.
