ALBANY, N.Y. -- The University of Maine women's basketball team (7-10, 2-2 America East), which led by as many as eight twice in the contest, was unable to hold its edge as it dropped a 60-55 decision at UAlbany (14-3, 4-0 AE) on Saturday afternoon.
Sera Hodgson posted a season-high 16 points with four triples while
Caroline Bornemann added her fourth double-double of the season with 16 points and 11 rebounds.
Asta Blauenfeldt posted 15 points to round out a trip of double-digit scorers. For Blauenfeldt, it was her seventh double-digit scoring performance in her last nine outings.
In a game which featured eight ties and five lead changes, the Black Bears shot 21-for-49 (42.9) from the floor with five triples while hitting 8-of-8 free throw opportunities. Maine, which was narrowly edged in rebounding by a 25-24 margin, forced 13 UAlbany turnovers.
The Black Bears opened the game on fire as back-to-back triples from Hodgson gave the visitors their largest lead of the day, 8-0.
UAlbany answered the punch with a 7-0 run to trim its deficit to one before. tying the game at 12-12 after one quarter.
The Great Danes tied the game three times in the second but were unable to snatch the lead.
A 9-2 run by Maine, fueled by five consecutive points from Blauenfeldt, pushed the lead out to seven.
Maine's lead would be a pair, 29-27, at the half.
After the Great Danes tied the contest once again to start the third, Hodgson answered with a pair of triples before Bornemann's bucket regained Maine's largest lead of the contest, 37-29.
The Black Bears carried a four point advantage into the fourth.
However, UAlbany would outscore the Black Bears 21-12 in the fourth to complete the come from behind victory.
Bornemann's bucket to start the fourth built Maine's lead to six with 9:20 left in the contest.
The Great Danes answered Bornemann's bucket with an 11-2 run to grab a 50-47 edge with just over five minutes remaining.
Maine battled back, with buckets from Bornemann and Hodgson, to go back on top by one, 53-51.
UAlbany closed out the game with a 10-4 run to take the contest, 60-55.
Maine returns to action on Thursday when it hosts NJIT at 6 p.m.
