Black Bears announce three midyear additions to roster

Head coach Scott Atherley announced the addition of three student-athletes to the Maine roster.

ORONO, Maine – The University of Maine women's soccer team has three midyear additions to its roster, head coach Scott Atherley announced on Tuesday, Jan. 28.

From the transfer portal, the Black Bears have added two defenders in Hilary Washington (Baylor University) and Meghan Bernetti (Campbell University) while forward Anna Molloy comes to the team after graduating from Orono High School in 2024. All three join the program immediately for the 2025 spring season.

"We are excited to welcome Anna, Meghan and Hilary to our team," said Atherley. "Having the spring semester to get them integrated with our team and familiar with our game model is extremely valuable. In addition to being great players, they are also outstanding students and people."

Bernetti comes to Orono after spending the last two seasons as a starter for the Camels. She played in all 35 games – starting 30 consecutive – and logged over 1,350 minutes each season while leading Campbell in minutes played in 2023. An Annapolis, Md. native, Bernetti played her club soccer for Maryland United ECNL and was a two-time First-Team All-Conference player at Archbishop Spalding High School.

"Meghan brings valuable collegiate experience to our team having logged over 2,500 game minutes while competing in a highly competitive conference. On the ball, she always has her head up and connects her passes. Defensively, she is physical, combative and strong in the air. Meghan communicates exceptionally well and she is someone who is highly capable of leading our back line."

Washington, a native of Wellesley, Ontario, spent her freshman season at Baylor University. Prior to her time in the Big 12, she played her club soccer for Dortmund BVB AI Waterloo League 1 Premier. Washington, who also has experience with the Canadian National Development Center, captained her Waterloo District High School squad to the WCSSA title in 2024 while earning team MVP honors and a WCSSA All-Star nod.

"Hilary's qualities as a fullback are a perfect match for our game model. In addition to being a strong 1-v-1 defender, she is aggressive about getting forward. Hilary possesses the physical tools to get up and down the field repeatedly and she can recover quickly when transitioning from attack to defending."

Molloy, an Orono native, played four years of club soccer for Seacoast United. At Orono High School, she was a four-time Maine state All-Star in soccer while also earning all-state honors in ice hockey (2022-24) and all-conference accolades in track (2022-23). Molloy also captained the soccer and hockey teams.

"I have coached Anna at the club level for some time and think she has some valuable qualities as an athlete and player. I am excited to see how these attributes translate to the Division I level as she is surrounded by so many great teammates and players."
