Preview: Maine ready for Border Battle with UNH, 'Fill the Steins' game Friday

Maine will host New Hampshire for a pair of Hockey East games Jan 24/25.

ORONO, Maine - The University of Maine women's ice hockey team will host the University of New Hampshire for a pair of games on Jan 24/25 at Alfond Arena, for their first home series in over a month. Game times are set for 6:00 pm and 4:00 pm, respectively, with both games streaming on ESPN+. Friday's game is the 'Fill the Steins' game, featuring the Maine pep band and a flash sale of $6 tickets

BLACK BEARS' LAST TIME OUT:

  • Maine most recently split with #15 UConn, as the Black Bears won the seven-round shootout on Friday in Storrs, CT. Saturday's game resulted in a 3-0 loss. 
  • This was the first time this season Maine took the shootout-win and extra conference point from a ranked team.
  • Mira Seregély scored her first goal of the season on Friday, followed by a powerplay goal by Mikayla Boarder. Sam Morrison tallied the shootout-winning goal in the seventh round, while Julia Bachetti made all seven saves in the shootout, plus 30 more in the game and overtime period.
  • Gracie Hanson, Kendall Sundby, Sam Morrison and Ava Stevenson each tallied an assist on Friday.
  • Julia Bachetti saw both starts against #15 UConn. 
  • The team blocked 30 shots between the two games and went 6-for-8 on penalty killing success.
  • Lily Fetch continues to lead the team in points with six goals and six assists. 

PREVIOUS MATCHUPS WITH UNH:

  • Maine saw the Wildcats earlier this month, on Jan. 3, when the Black Bears came out with a 4-1 win, picking up three Hockey East points.
  • Maine outshot UNH 34-33, and Sam Morrison, Mikayla Boarder and Stephanie Jacob each registered a goal and an assist in the win.
  • Kiia Lahtinen made 32 saves between the pipes for the Black Bears.

SCOUTING THE WILDCATS (12-11-1, 8-9-0 HE)

  • The Wildcats most recently earned their first win over a ranked team as well, as they took down #14 BU on Saturday, 2-0.
  • Sophomore goaltender Sedona Blair recorded 26 saves in the shutout, as she earned Hockey East Goalie of the Week this week.
  • Senior assistant captain Shea Verrier scored a first-period goal and Sara Boucher scored their second goal in the third period.

LOOKING AHEAD:

  • Maine will hit the road next weekend, facing Providence College on Jan. 31 and Holy Cross on Feb. 1. 
  • Maine returns home the following weekend, Feb. 7 for a single game against Northeastern.
