Caroline Bornemann became the 26th player in University of Maine women's basketball (8-10, 3-2 America East) history to reach 1,000 career points as she poured in a career-high 34 points to lead the Black Bears to a 71-58 victory over NJIT (6-11, 3-1) on Thursday evening. The win pushes Maine's home conference win streak to 16.
Bornemann, who reached the 1,000 point mark on a second quarter free throw, posted her 11th career double-double in the win with 34 points and 13 rebounds to go along with a career-high six assists. Bornemann, who had zero turnovers in the contest, finished 14-of-25 from the floor and a perfect 5-of-5 from the free throw stripe.
Caroline Dotsey posted 12 points to aid the victory while
Olivia Rockwood hit a trio of triples for nine.
Maine dominated the boards, posting a 43-31 rebounding advantage including 17 on the offensive end. The Black Bears shot 28-of-68 (41.2) with a season-low five turnovers, the fourth time this season they have recorded single-digit turnover totals in a game.
Maine's best shooting quarter came in the first as it posted a 58.8 percent (10-17) clip in the first 10 minutes. The Black Bears regained their lead with 8:29 left in the opening quarter and would never trail again.
Leading by a pair midway through the first, Talon's deep jumper began a 7-0 run as a
Paula Gallego triple and a bucket off a turnover from Bornemann stretched Maine's lead to nine late in the first.
Bornemann's elbow jumper to end the first gave Maine its first double-digit lead of the night, 24-14.
After NJIT cut the deficit to six, Maine responded with a 10-3 run. Talon's steal and coast-to-coast layup built Maine's largest lead of the half, 34-21.
The Highlanders battled back to end the second as Maine's lead would stand at six, 36-30, at the half.
Maine raced out to a 6-0 run to begin the second half as back-to-back buckets from Bornemann stretched the lead to 12.
The hosts would maintain a double-digit lead for much of the third until a 10-2 run by NJIT cut the advantage down to five late in the third.
Five was as close as NJIT would get as Maine finished the contest strong in the fourth.
Rockwood opened the final quarter with a triple as Maine staged an 8-2 run, capped by a Dotsey three, to take its largest lead of the night at 62-48.
The lead would not dip below eight the rest of the way as Maine cruised to its third league victory by a final of 71-58.
The Black Bears return to action on Saturday when they host UMBC at 1 p.m.
