BALTIMORE, Md. – The University of Maine softball team dropped both ends of an America East-opening doubleheader at UMBC on Friday night.

How it Happened

• UMBC took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first off of a left field double and stretched it out to 4-0 with two home runs in the fourth inning.
• The Black Bears got on the board in the top of the fifth … Katie Jo Moery earned a walk and then stole second … Gabby Papushka reached on drop-third strike wild pitch and Moery moved over, setting up a two-run double for Kennedy Priest.
• The Retrievers then added three runs in the fifth and one run in the sixth for the 8-2 final.

 Game Notes

• Caitlyn Fallon started, throwing 3.1innings while allowing four runs on five hits with three strikeouts and one walk … Isabelle True went 2.2 innings in relief, allowing four runs – three earned – on six hits while walking three.
• Kennedy Priest went 1-for-2 at the plate while Rylee Kent and Kenedee Giddens were 1-for-3 … Priest finished with two doubles.
• Katie Jo Moery and Gabby Papushka scored the runs for Maine.

How it Happened

• UMBC jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.
• The Black Bears responded with three runs in the top of the second frame … Katie Jo Moery started the frame off with a single and then Anna Margetis singled to drive her in … a Keira Inman double plated Margetis … Inman scored on a throwing error.
• UMBC put two more runs on the board in the bottom half of the second.
• After Kyli Hernandez doubled to left center in the fourth, she scored on another UMBC error to make it 10-4.
• UMBC then closed out the game with two runs in the bottom of the fifth.

 Game Notes

• Kyli Hernandez (1-for-3), Katie Jo Moery (1-for-2), Anna Margetis (1-for-3), Rylee Kent (1-for-3) and Keira Inman (1-for-2) collected hits for the Black Bears.
• Kaly Thomas, Ava Zettlemoyer, Alysen Rieth and Caitlyn Fallon all pitched for Maine … Rieth went a team-high 3.2 innings while allowing two runs on three hits with two strikeouts and eight walks.
