Orono, ME - The University of Maine men's basketball team snapped their three-game losing streak with a hard fought victory over UMBC on Thursday night, 62-56.
The first half was the lowest scoring half the Black Bears have competed in during the 2023-24 season as the score stood at 20-16 in favor of the Retrievers heading into the break.
Maine came out in the second half as a totally new team as they immediately went on a 12-2 run to overtake UMBC and grab their first lead of the night and push it to their largest of the contest at 28-22.
Both sides traded the lead back-and-forth throughout the rest of the second half before Maine put away the game for good on a three-pointer by
Peter Filipovity with 30 seconds remaining in the contest to increase their lead to five points.
Maine picked up the victory, 62-56.
Filipovity finished with a double-double on the night as he had 13 points and 11 rebounds.
Kellen Tynes finished with 12 points, three rebounds, three assists and a steal while
Jaden Clayton had nine points in the Black Bear backcourt.
Kristians Feierbergs found his shooting touch as he had 11 points and shot 60% from the field.
Maine (12-15, 4-8 AE) have postioned themselves to clinch a spot in the America East Playoffs with a win on Saturday against NJIT. Tip-off for the contest is scheduled for 2 P.M. in Orono.
