Smith registers double-double in loss at UAlbany

Orono, Maine -- The University of Maine women's basketball team (12-8, 5-1 AE) saw its five-game win streak snap with a 54-47 loss at UAlbany (17-2, 6-0 AE) on Thursday evening.

Adrianna Smith led the Black Bears by posting her 14th double-double on the season, and the fourth in as many games, with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Caroline Bornemann hit a trio of threes for nine points to go along with five rebounds.

Maine, which won the rebounding battle (39-36) for the sixth consecutive game, struggled from the floor as it finished the contest 18-of-64 (28.1%).

Defensively, Maine remained strong as it forced 17 UAlbany turnovers while holding the Great Danes to their third lowest point total of the season and fewest in conference play.

UAlbany was hot in the first half, finishing the opening 20 minutes of action 11-of-21 from the floor.

Neither team could settle in offensively in the first quarter as the Great Danes built an 11-5 lead on a 8-0 run before Bornemann's triple cut the deficit to three after one.

The UAlbany lead swelled to nine before Maine responded with an 8-2 run. Bornemann got things started with another triple before a three from Sera Hodgson and a putback off an offensive board by Smith brought Maine back within three with 4:25 left in the opening half.

UAlbany answered with a 5-0 run before taking a seven point lead, 26-19, into the break.

Maine's best quarter came in the third where it shot 6-of-15 from the floor.

The Great Danes would take their largest lead of the game, 35-25, with 5:50 left in the third quarter. However, Maine would hold UAlbany scoreless for the remainder of the quarter and close within one thanks to a 9-0 run.

Olivia Rockwood started the spring with a triple before Smith's turnaround jumper brought Maine to within five. Two more buckets from Smith followed, including one at the buzzer to trim the deficit down to one, 35-34, entering the final quarter.

UAlbany stretched its lead to five in the fourth before Maine again rallied to within a pair. However, it would be as close as Maine would get as UAlbany secured the victory down the stretch, 54-47.

Maine continues road action when it travels to meet Binghamton on Saturday at 2 p.m.
