Orono, Maine -- The University of Maine women's basketball team (13-8, 6-1 America East) outscored Binghamton (7-13, 2-5 AE) by a 17-5 margin in the third quarter to help guide it to a 59-56 come from behind road victory on Saturday afternoon.
Adrianna Smith posted her 15th double-double of the season, and fifth in as many games, with a game-high 19 points and 15 rebounds while
Paula Gallego added her first career double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. The duo were joined in double-figures by
Anne Simon (12) and
Olivia Rockwood (11).
Maine continued its rebounding dominance as it held a 40-28 edge over Binghamton on the glass with 18 of the 40 boards coming on the offensive end. The Black Bears shot 19-of-57 (33.3) from the floor with eight triples to go along with a 13-for-20 showing from the free throw stripe.
Defensively, Maine forced 14 Binghamton turnovers while limiting the Bearcats to just 1-of-8 from the floor in the third period.
Maine dug itself into a 10-2 hole early before responding with an 11-0 run to trim the deficit to one, 13-12, after one quarter.
The Black Bears regained a two point advantage on a Rockwood triple early in the second. However, Binghamton would close the quarter on a 15-3 run to carry its largest lead of the day, 28-18, into the break.
Maine regained composure at the half and came out with a great third quarter effort, outscoring the Bearcats 17-5 in the period and allowing just one field goal over the 10 minute span.
Trailing by 10 early in the third, Maine was able to piece together a 12-0 run to go back up by a pair. Seven of the first eight points of the run came off the hand of Smith before
Jaycie Christopher's free throw trimmed the deficit to one. Gallego's triple put Maine back on top, 32-30, with 1:24 left in the third.
Maine would lead by two entering the fourth quarter.
Leading by four with 4:46 remaining in regulation, Maine would go on an 8-2 run. The sprint would be capped by a big triple from Gallego, giving Maine its largest lead of the contest, 52-42.
Binghamton was able to cut the advantage down to three but it would be as close as it would get as Maine completed the comeback victory, 59-56.
The Black Bears return to action on Feb. 1 when they host UMass Lowell at Memorial Gymnasium.
