Maine gives up heartbreaker to Merrimack in shootout

North Andover, Mass. - The University of Maine women's ice hockey team skated to a 3-3 tie with Merrimack College on Saturday at Lawler Rink, before the Warriors earned the extra point in a shootout win.

After a scoreless first period, the Black Bears came out on a scoring frenzy in the second period scoring three goals in the last nine minutes. Ann-Frederique Guay opened the scoring for Maine, popping in a second goal, Maine's third, on the power play just eight minutes later. Ida Kuoppala scored a short-handed goal on a breakaway, in between Guay's goals. Ida Kuoppala, Sophia Johnson, Jamie Grinder, Olivia King and Elise Morphy each tallied an assist.

With just three minutes and forty seconds left to play, Maine gave up their three-goal lead, allowing the Warriors to strike three times to push the game into overtime. One of Merrimack's goals came on a power-play opportunity. After a scoreless five-minute overtime period, the Warriors won the shootout for the extra league point.

Senior goaltender Anna LaRose made 22 saves for Maine, as the team put up 27 shots against Merrimack.

Maine and Merrimack both went 1-for-4 on the power play.
