Durham, NH - The University of women's ice hockey team dropped game one of the weekend to the University of New Hampshire by a score of 4 to 2, Friday at the Whittemore Center.
A pair of third period penalties called on Maine forced them to give up their one-goal lead late in the game, allowing the Wildcats to score three unanswered goals, one as an empty-netter.
After a scoreless first period, Maine's captain Elise Morpy opened up the scoring with a shot from the point to put Maine up.
Ida Kuoppala and
Ann-Frederique Guay registered assists. After UNH responded with an even-strength goal, freshman defender
Ashley Kokavec gave Maine the lead once again, scoring on a pass in the slot from
Rahel Enzler.
With back-to-back penalties in under 10 minutes to play, UNH capitalized twice to take the lead. The Wildcats secured an empty-net goal with two minutes on the clock.
Freshman goaltender
Julia Bachetti made 30 saves for Maine with the final shots being even at 34 apiece.
The Black Bears were 0-for-1 on the power play and 2-for-4 on the penalty kill.
