Orono, Maine - The University of Maine's women's ice hockey team is set to begin their 2023-24 season with a non-conference matchup against the #8 ranked Quinnipiac on Friday, Sept. 29 at 6:00 P.M. and Saturday, Sept. 30 at 3:00 P.M. in Hamden, Connecticut.

Notes on the Black Bears

The Black Bears ended the 2022-23 season as the sixth place seed in Hockey East. The Black Bears had four wins over nationally ranked teams last season, including a 1-0 victory over No. 3 Northeastern and a 5-4 overtime triumph over No. 10 Clarkson. This year, they were voted seventh in the 2023-24 Hockey East preseason poll.

Maine defeated the University of New Brunswick 3 to 0 last weekend, in their season-opening exhibition. With a goal in each period, the Black Bears dominated the game outshooting UNB 52-22. Elise Morphy scored first on a power play one-timer, while junior line mates Mira Seregely and Alyssa Wruble scored a goal apiece. All three goaltenders saw a period of play, for a split shutout of 22 saves.

The Black Bears' twelve returners include five of the top eight scorers, five defensemen who played in at least 27 games a year ago, and two of the three goalkeepers. Last year's leading scorer, Hungarian National Team member Mira Seregely is among the returning core.

The Black Bears and Bobcats last played a pair of non-conference games in September of 2022, in Orono, Maine. Game one ended in a 2-2 tie, before the Bobcats earned the extra point by scoring a quick goal in the overtime period.

Game two ended in a 3-0 victory for the Bobcats. Even though there were twelve penalties called in game two - 6 penalties per team - the Bobcats only capitalized on one power play opportunity.

Quinnipiac is coming off of a 30-10-0 record season which landed them to be ranked #8 in the country.

The Bobcats will return 9 of their top 11 scorers for the upcoming year. Maya Labad (31 points in '22-23), Sadie Peart (28 points in '22-23), Alexa Hoskin (24 points in '22-23), Kendall Cooper (23 points in '22-23), Maddy Samoskevich (21 points in '22-23), Jess Schryver (21 points in '22-23), Nina Steigauf (20 points in '22-23), Kate Reilly (18 points in '22-23) and Madison Chantler (17 points in '22-23) are all back with the Bobcats for 2023-24.
