Season Preview: Women's Ice Hockey Hosts University of New Brunswick in Exhibition Action

ORONO, Maine—The University of Maine's Women's Ice Hockey team is beginning action with an exhibition game on Saturday, Sept. 23 at 3 p.m., against the University of New Brunswick.

Head coach Molly Engstrom has quite a new look to the team this season, as she brought in 14 new players, as well as a new assistant coach - Nina Rodgers. The Black Bears finished the 2022-23 sixth in Hockey East with a record of 15-18-2, (12-13-2 HE), before falling to #14 Providence College in Hockey East Quarterfinals.

The nine first-year players are joined by five transfers from five different schools - Ohio State, Bemidji State, St. Cloud State, Long Island University and Norwich University.

The returning group of twelve includes leading scorer from last season Mira Seregély (11-12-23), fifth-year alternate captain Ida Kuoppala, and two senior net-minders Anna LaRose and Jorden Mattison. Senior captain Elise Morphy is also among the returners, after leading the defenders in points (4-8-12) last season.

"We're looking forward to getting the group going. There are a fair number of new faces including the freshman class, a couple of transfers and the new coach on staff in Nina Rodgers. The energy is positive around the team and we're ready to get started," said head coach Molly Engstrom.

The Black Bears were voted seventh in the 2023-24 Hockey East preseason poll.
