ORONO, Maine -- The University of Maine softball team defeated the University of UMass Lowell River Hawks in game one, 3-2, while dropping game two, 5-0, at the new UMaine Softball Complex

Game One: University of Maine 3, University of UMass Lowell 2

The River Hawks took advantage of two errors in the top of the first inning and scored the game's first run. The four-hole hitter lined a single up the middle, giving her squad an early one run advantage.

UMass Lowell loaded the bases with one out. They were only able to score one run in the top of the second thanks to a walk. After two innings, Maine trailed 2-0.

The Black Bears scored a run in the bottom of the fourth to cut into the UMass Lowell lead.
Izzy Nieblas singled to right and pushed
Katie Jo Moery across home. At the end of four innings, the River Hawks held a 2-1 lead.

Madison Hand led off the bottom of the seventh with a single.
Kelby Drews pinch hit and ripped a double to the fence. Hand scored on the two-bagger.
Grace McGouldrick pinch ran for Drews and advanced to third on a bunt.
Katie Jo Moery drove home McGouldrick with a ground ball to short. It was enough to knock-off the River Hawks in game one of the afternoon.

The River Hawks struck first in game number two, as well. A sacrifice fly and a single up the middle equaled two runs for the visitors. At the end of the first inning, Maine trailed 2-0.

UMass Lowell added two more runs in the top of the fourth inning. A single and a double were the run scoring knocks. The lead was four after four innings.

A fielding error pushed across another run for the visitors. Maine was looking at a 5-0 lead after six complete at the new UMaine Softball Complex.

They were the final runs of the afternoon as the Black Bears fell, 5-0.
