Softball Falls in Both Ends of Doubleheader at Binghamton

VESTAL, N.Y. -- The University of Maine softball team was defeated by Binghamton University on both ends of the doubleheader, 9-1 and 4-3, at the Bearcats Softball Complex.

Game One: University of Maine 1, Binghamton University 9

In the bottom of the first inning, Binghamton took a 1-0 lead. After the Black bears committed a throwing error on a bunt, Lindsey Walter found herself on third. She would score on a ground out one batter later. Sarah Rende scored the Bearcats' second run in the first on another throwing error.

Binghamton added to their lead in the bottom of the third inning. Rende lifted a triple to right field before Maine committed a throwing error. A second triple and a single in the inning plated three more Bearcats. At the end of three innings in Vestal, Maine trailed 6-0.

The Bearcats pushed three more across in the bottom of the fourth inning. Alysen Rieth was called upon to close the door on the rally.

The Black Bears were able to score one run in the top of the fifth, but it was as close as they could get. Maine fell 9-1 in game one of the afternoon.

Notes: Game Two: University of Maine 3, Binghamton University 4

The Black Bears took a two run lead in the top of the first inning. Katie Jo Moery crushed her first career home run over the left field fence. Grace McGouldrick came around to score on the blast. Binghamton matched serve with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. After the first, the game was tied, 2-2.

Maine regained the lead in the top of the fourth inning. With runners on second and third, Kennedy Priest executed a perfect safety squeeze. Izzy Nieblas scored on the bunt. At the end of four innings, the Black Bears held a 3-2 lead.

Binghamton manufactured a run of their own in the bottom of the sixth. With runners on third and second, the Bearcats grounded out to short. It was enough to push across the game tying run. After six complete, the game was tied 3-3.

Binghamton walked-off in the bottom of the seventh with a double to the wall. Maine fell in the final game of the day, 4-3.

Notes: Next: The Black Bears are scheduled to open their brand new softball complex this Saturday, April 1. First pitch against Albany is scheduled for 12:00 pm.
