Lynchburg, Virginia - The University of Maine softball team was defeated by both George Washington University and Charleston Southern in a doubleheader, with scores of 9-1 and 8-5, on Friday afternoon.

Game #1 - Maine: 1 George Washington: 9

In the top of the first inning, George Washington University grabbed the first run of the day making it 1-0 at the end of the first.
Gabbie Siciliano got the start in the circle for Maine and only allowed for one hit and run in the first inning.

Maine would get its first hit of the day from
Izzy Nieblas, who singled a bunt to the pitcher in the bottom of the second inning. George Washington would manage to bring in another run (unearned) to close out the second inning.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Maine would get its second hit of the day with a
Gabby Papushka double to right field. During the top of the fourth,Â
Emily Reid would enter to pitch for Maine to close out the second half of the game.

In the bottom of the 6th, Maine would get its first and only run of the day with an RBI from
Kya Enos. The senior tripled to center, driving in
Grace McGouldrick. With George Washington scoring two more runs in their half of the sixth inning, the game would be called complete with the run rule coming into effect.

Game #2 - Maine: 5 Charleston Southern: 8

The Black Bears kept things calm for the first two innings, allowing only two hits and one walk. It was the bottom of the third inning where the hits and runs would start flooding in for Maine.

Rylee Kent started off with a single to left field.
Grace McGouldrick would then single to left, pushing Kent to second, and then
Kya Enos hit a big double bringing Kent in to score the first run of the contest. The Black Bears were still not done this inning.Â
Gabby Papushka doubled to center field driving in both McGouldrick and Enos. Charleston Southern would call for a pitching change. but that did not stop Maine.Â
Izzy Nieblas and
Keely Clark would each drive in a run making it 5-0 heading into the fourth.

Charleston Southern would begin to answer with three of their own in the top of the fifth inning. They then would also score five unearned runs in the top of the 6th inning to make the score 8-5.

Gabbie Siciliano would come into the circle in the top of the seventh to replace
Alexandra Gruitch and would pitch a clean inning. Unfortunately, the Black Bears were unable to mount a comeback, as the 8-5 score would stand for Charleston Southern.
