BANGOR, ME - The University of Maine men's basketball team fell to the Seawolves of Stony Brook, 85-74.
Both sides started the game with their offense cooking in the first half, led by Maks Klanjscek for the Black Bears and Anthony Roberts for the Seawolves.
Roberts buried a half-high 21 points on 7-11 shooting, hitting 4 of 5 3-pointers along the way.
Klanjscek buried 14 points for the Black Bears on 5-8 shooting and 4-5 from 3-point range. Maine was unstoppable from behind the arc in the first half, knocking down 9 of 16, including a half-court buzzer-beater by Byron Ireland to cut into the Stony Brook lead heading into the locker rooms.
The Seawolves held onto a 46-40 lead at the half.
The second half found both sides keeping up the offensive pressure.
The Seawolves got out to a game-high 16 point lead with 7:57 left in the second half.
Maine would start to cut into the deficit, but following late free-throws by the Seawolves, the lead would become impassable for the Black Bears.
Stony Brook would come away with the victory, 85-74.
The Seawolves were led by a career day from Anthony Roberts, who dropped 40 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists. He also knocked down 9 of 12 3-point attempts.
Maine was led by another great performance by Maks Klanjscek, who scored 24 points, shot 6 of 9 from 3-point range and 9 for 16 overall. Vukasin Masic contributed with 14 points of his own. The Black Bears also buried 15 3-pointers as a squad, one shy of the program record.
For the Black Bears, their next matchup will come on the road as they make the trip to Hartford on Wednesday, Feb. 16.
