Box Score ORONO, ME -- The Maine Black Bear's men's basketball team fell short to America East Foe UMBC by a score of 88-46 Saturday afternoon in Bangor. Adefolalrin Adetogun lead Maine with 10 points in the contest.
The Black Bears looked to be off to a fiery start when three consecutive shots from outside the arc by Maks Klanjseck and two from Fofo Adetogun fell and Maine was out to an early 9-4 lead.
The momentum did not last and swung in favor of the Retrievers who went on a 24-point run which delivered a knockout blow to the surging Black Bears. Maine's offense was stifled, draining just one three pointer in their next 21 attempts along with going 18-60 from the floor.
UMBC had two near-perfect halves and once taking that substantial early lead never looked back. After trailing 45-20 at the breaking point, there was some hope Maine would find a rhythm in the second half and pull closer to the Retrievers. UMBC opened the second half with two quick three pointers and kept their paw on the gas. Additional to their finishing ability, UMBC was 90% from the free throw line adding 19 points off Maine fouls which proved to be devastating.
The Black Bears return to the Cross Insurance Center court on Monday, January 24
th at 7PM when they host the UNH Wildcats in an America East Border Battle.
