Black Bears suffer third straight overtime loss

Harvard defeats Maine in the home opener, 2-1

ORONO - The Maine field hockey team dropped their home opener on Friday afternoon, their third straight overtime battle to start the season, as Harvard found the game-winner in the first overtime half to take a 2-1 win.

Both teams were locked in a 0-0 battle through the entirety of the first half, with Mia Borley posting four saves in the half to keep Maine in it. The third period finally saw some action, as Maine responded to Harvard's opening goal just two minutes afterward with a corner executed by Poppy Lambert, as she scored her sixth career goal and first of her sophomore season. Tereza Holubcova and Brittany Smith were credited with assists on the play.

The 1-1 tie lasted through regulation, with both teams recording just two shots on goal each in the half. Harvard finally broke through in the first overtime, beating Borley and the defense off a corner play to take the 2-1 victory.

Maine falls to 0-3 on the season after yet another overtime game. They'll get back to work tomorrow afternoon against Providence, a 2:00 start in Orono.
