Black Bears Win A Thriller in Overtime

Maine defeats Providence 2-1 behind Poppy Lambert's GWG

ORONO - The University of Maine field hockey team took home their first win of the 2021 fall season on Saturday,  with sophomore Poppy Lambert finding the game-winner in the final moments of overtime to give the Black Bears a 2-1 win in their fourth straight overtime game.

Brooke Sulinski found the back of the net in the first quarter, her second goal of the season, as she took the ball unassisted on a drive down the left side of the pitch to stake out a 1-0 Maine lead. Mia Borley and the Maine defense put forth a solid effort all day, making 8 saves through the first 3 quarters, but Providence found the equalizer early in the fourth quarter. The Black Bears earned multiple corners and circle entries in the fourth quarter, registering three shots on goal, but were unable to capitalize, leading to the team's fourth overtime of the season in four games.

In the first overtime period, the Black Bears kept the pressure coming with a pair of corners and three shots, but were unable to find the winner. Late into the second overtime period, however, Maine finally capitalized as Poppy Lambert scored her second of the season off a corner, executing the impressive drag flick to the top right corner of the cage to  give Maine their first win of 2021.

Next weekend, Maine will look to keep the momentum going as they head for the Midwest to take on #4 Northwestern and Kent State in Chicago.
