ORONO - The University of Maine field hockey program picked up their fourth straight win and finished their first America East weekend with a spotless 2-0 record, as
Poppy Lambert scored twice to lead the Bears to a 3-2 win over Stanford on Sunday afternoon.
Rainstorms plagued Penobscot County for most of the morning, resulting in a 30-minute delay to the start of this one.
Stanford came out firing, possessing the ball for the majority of the first quarter and picking up a goal in the final minute to take a 1-0 lead. The Cardinal has been playing the 2021 season without a goaltender on their roster, showing incredible teamwork and determination from end to end.
Maine finally broke through in the final moments of the second quarter, as the Bears earned three consecutive corners before finally converting on the third to send the game into the break tied at 1-1.
The stalemate lasted for the majority of the third quarter, before
Chloe Walton broke off a series of moves to take the ball from the middle of the pitch deep into the circle where she buried her fourth goal of the season and give Maine a 2-1 lead.
Poppy Lambert stepped up on a corner attempt mere moments later, netting her second goal of the day and fourth of the season to put Maine up 3-2.
Stanford made things interesting with a goal with less than two minutes remaining, but the Maine defense held strong and the Bears escaped with a 3-2 win.
Maine improves to 5-5 overall and 2-0 within the conference with the win, their fourth in a row. The Bears have won four in a row, and nine of their last ten home games dating back to the spring season.
The Black Bears will hit the road next weekend, traveling to Albany for a Friday afternoon battle with the rival Danes, followed by a trip to Boston for a Sunday non-conference tilt with the Terriers of Boston University.
