#25 Maine heads for Illinois for a pair of ranked battles

Black Bears will take on #23 Kent State and #5 Northwestern

ORONO - After a thrilling double-overtime win against Providence and recent No. 25 national ranking in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association poll, the Maine field hockey program gets back on the road to face off with No. 23 Kent State and No. 5 Northwestern in Chicago on Saturday and Sunday.

With an exciting weekend in the Windy City ahead, the Black Bears are hungry for another upset against the two nationally ranked programs. In 2019, the Bears defeated No. 5 Northwestern 4-3 in overtime, the highest-ranked win in program history. The Bears are no stranger to the mentally and physically demanding 7 vs. 7 overtime and are ready for an intense weekend of hockey ahead, as all four games in the Maine fall have required extra time.

Going into the weekend, Poppy Lambert is looking to keep her goal streak going, as she tallied a goal each against Harvard and Providence over the best weekend. Lambert's overtime drag flick is her fifth career game-winning goal, and her 2020-2021 season ranks amongst the Black Bear's finest rookie campaigns in recent memory. The 2019 America East Defender of the Year Cassandra Mascarenhas will look to lead a defensive unit that allows just 2.25 goals a game and has improved with each outing. Mia Borley has been putting forth her strongest start to a season yet in her illustrious career, leading the conference and ranking 10th in the nation with 7.00 saves a game.

Hungry to build the win streak, the 1-3 Black Bears are ready to set the tone in Chicago against Kent State on Saturday at noon. With a quick turnaround, the Bears will be back on the field to battle it out against the hosts No. 5 Northwestern.
