Maine drops another overtime thriller, falls to UMass

Sulinski and Meader score goals late to force overtime

AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Maine field hockey team dropped another overtime thriller on Sunday afternoon, falling to the University of Massachusetts by a 3-2 final.

Maine was kept off the scoreboard to the point where a UMass shutout loomed large, before Brooke Sulinski broke through for her first goal of the season with just 5:09 remaining in the fourth quarter to cut the Minutewomen lead down to 2-1.

The Bears earned a penalty corner with just eight seconds showing on the clock, converting their ninth corner of the afternoon via a Sydney Meader goal (originally credited to Lambert) created by assists from Cassandra Mascarenhas and Tereza Holubcova to tie the  game at two and set the action into extra time.

UMass took four straight penalty corners in the first five minutes of overtime, finally sneaking  the game-winner past Mia  Borley after back-to-back sprawling saves from the Orono netminder to secure the 3-2 win.

With back-to-back overtime losses to start the season, the battle-tested Black Bears will return to Orono for their next contest, a 3:00 date with Harvard on Friday followed by another home contest against Providence on Saturday.
