Orono, Maine -- Maine Football's upcoming games with Rhode Island and New Hampshire have been canceled due to ongoing COVID-19 issues with each of Maine's opponents.
On Tuesday afternoon, New Hampshire announced that it had opted out of its remaining two games of the spring 2021 season due to ongoing COVID-19 issues within the program.
On Wednesday morning, Rhode Island announced that its football program has entered a shutdown as a result of multiple positive COVID-19 tests within its program, effectively ending the team's season.
UMaine administration is currently assessing all available options for the remaining open dates for the spring season.
The football program continues to follow all state, University of Maine System, Colonial Athletic Association, and NCAA guidelines. Antigen and PCR testing for the football program continues for all Tier 1 personnel, which includes student-athletes, coaches, and support staff.
UMaine continues to follow all COVID-19-related health and safety guidance while monitoring the status of the pandemic in Maine and throughout the region.
