AMHERST, Mass. -- The University of Maine softball team split an afternoon doubleheader with the University of Massachusetts by scores of 6-15 and 9-4 on Tuesday afternoon.

Game One - Maine: 6 UMass: 15
Â
UMass scored a run in the bottom of the first and second inning. A double and an infield single scored the two Minutemen runs.

Jasmine Gray and
Amanda Nee strung two hits together in the top of the 4th inning. The Black Bears tied the non-conference contest at two runs apiece during their ups in the top of the 4th.

The Black Bears took a three run lead in the top of the 5th after
Kelby Drews hit a three run home run. It was the final lead of the game for Maine.

UMass scored 12 runs over the 5th and 6th innings to run-rule UMaine. The Black Bears dropped the first game of the afternoon, 15-6.

Game Two - Maine: 9 UMass: 4

In the top of the second inning, Maine took a 4-0 lead.
Brianna Neely and
Izzy Nieblas recorded run scoring doubles, while
Emma Larke and
Kelby Drews manufactured runs as they recorded outs.

In the bottom half of the inning, UMass scored three runs on a triple. The score was 4-3 after two complete.

Larke and Neely combined to drive in more runs with two singles in the third. Maine was once again ahead by three runs with a 6-3 lead.

Larke stayed hot with another RBI single, this time in the 5th. In the top half of the 6th,
Kelby Drews blasted another home run while Neely earned an RBI on a walk. After six innings in Amherst, Maine led 9-3.

In the bottom of the 6th inning, UMass scored only one run after loading the bases. It was the final run scored of the afternoon as Maine held onto the 9-4 lead to split the afternoon doubleheader.

Next: Maine will return to conference play this Saturday, April 17th at Binghamton. First pitch for the Saturday doubleheader is scheduled for 12:00 pm.
