Kyleigh O'Donnell Leads the Way in Afternoon Split with Hartford

ORONO, Maine -- The University of Maine softball team split an afternoon doubleheader with Hartford by scores of 5-2 and 1-10 on Saturday afternoon.
 
Game One - Maine: 5 Hartford: 2
 
In the bottom of the first inning, Maine scored four runs. Izzy Nieblas, Kelby Drews, and Keely Clark all drove in runs with hits to right field. Nieblas dropped a single in front of the right fielder, while Drews and Clark hit doubles off the wall. After one complete, Maine led 4-0.
 
In the top of the 5th inning, Hartford scored its first run of the ball game. Zoe Truxon singled and scored Mara Sczecienski from second base. After the Hawks' ups in the 5th, Maine held a three run lead.
 
Emma Larke added an insurance run in the bottom of the 6th inning with a stand-up triple. Kya Enos scored on the extra base hit. Hartford scored a run in the top of the 7th, but it was as close as they would get. Maine won game one 5-2.
 
Notes:
  • Kyleigh O'Donnell went the distance for the Black Bears. The senior tossed all 7.0 innings, while striking out nine, and allowing only one earned.
  • Emma Larke, Izzy Nieblas, Kelby Drews, and Kya Enos all recorded two hits during the first game. Drews drove in two RBI with her double in the first.
 
Game Two - Maine: 1 Hartford: 10
 
The Hawks manufactured a run in the top of the first inning. Chandler Mitchell singled to lead off the inning. The left fielder stole second then third. Mara Sczecienski lifted a sacrifice fly to center that scored Mitchell. Before Maine had its first hacks, Hartford snagged a 1-0 lead.
 
Izzy Nieblas evened the second game of the afternoon with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first inning. Kya Enos scored on the sac fly.
 
Emma Curry and Emma Armstrong hit home runs in the top of the third inning for the Hawks. Maine trailed 5-1 after two and half innings.
 
Danielle Rocheleau doubled in the top half of the 4th inning before Kelsie Galevich scored a run with an RBI single up the middle. Armstrong hit another three-run home run in the 4th. The Hawks led 10-1 after the 4th.
 
The Black Bears were unable to mount a comeback as they dropped game two on the afternoon.

Next: The two squads will finish the three game series with a single game tomorrow, Sunday, April 11th.
