Maine takes series from Wagner, 12-3

Fastest Maine team to five wins since 2003

BROOKLYN, N.Y - The Maine baseball offense showed up in a major way for the series finale against Wagner, pounding out 12 runs behind 3-RBI days from Sean Lawlor and Jake Rainess

Wagner got on the board first with an RBI single off the Maine starter Michael Bacica, but that would prove to be their last run until the ninth inning.

The turning point in this one came in the fourth, starting with Sean Lawlor smacking a double into the opposite field gap with the bases loaded for three RBIs. Then it was the hottest hitter on the planet, Jake Rainess, smashing his third home run of the season to drive in three runs and extend the Black Bear lead to 6-1.

After tacking on a run in the sixth, Maine collected five runs in the eighth inning to ice the victory, highlighted by Jeff Mejia's two-RBI double.

The pitching staff was solid again for Maine, led by a shining relief appearance by Alex McKenney. McKenny threw five innings of relief, allowing just a single hit with no walks and four strikeouts. Nick Caviglia worked a perfect eighth inning with a pair of strikeouts, and Dillon Stimpson took care of the ninth.

With the 12-3 victory, Maine hits the five-win mark in the shortest amount of games since the 2003 season. The Black Bears recorded a double-digit run total for the second time this season, compared to just a single time last season and just four times during the 2019 season.

Jake Rainess now leads the team with three home runs and 10 RBIs in just 12 at-bats this season. Connor Goodman quietly went 7-14 over the three-game set, and now sits with a .457 batting average and an America East-best 16 hits this season. Maine as a team has posted a .972 fielding percentage this season, with just eight errors in 282 chances, second-best in the conference.

The Black Bears ride this hot streak into conference play, beginning next weekend down on Long Island with a pair of doubleheaders against conference preseason-favorite Stony Brook.
