Bears split with Wagner, Sinacola dominant again

Junior righty struck out 12 for his second win of the season

BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The University of Maine baseball program split their doubleheader against Wagner College on Saturday, led to victory in game one by a Nicholas Sinacola gem on the mound.

Sinacola improved on a shining season debut a week ago, as the junior continues to prove himself as one of the most dominant arms in the conference and region. In seven innings, Sinacola struck out a new career-high 12, his second double-digit total in as many outings. Only two hits were surrendered, none before the seventh inning, both singles, and the only run of the outing came on a wild pitch. Sinacola did it all on just 97 pitches, earned the win, and lowered his season ERA to 1.42 alongside 23 total strikeouts in just two games.

Matthew Pushard was flawless out of the bullpen, throwing two no-hit innings to close out the win.

The offense was just as noteworthy, as Sean Lawlor tied the game up with a solo shot in the sixth inning. A few batters later it was Jake Rainess with a grand slam, his second home run and seventh total RBI of the season, both team-highs in just eight at-bats this season.

Maine pounded out ten hits in the game, the fourth time they've hit double-digits in the hit column this season. The Black Bears hit that mark just once in 13 games last season, and six times total in 49 games in 2019.

The 5-1 final score rose Maine's win total to four on the year, the fastest they've hit that mark since a 4-0 start to the 2008 season.

Game two saw a little bit of stagnation in the Maine offense, as the Black Bears left 11 baserunners stranded in game two. The pitching wavered similarly, giving up five earned runs and four walks across their eight innings.

Jeff Mejia and Quinn McDaniel each notched three-hit efforts in the game, with McDaniel knocking the first triple of the Maine season.

With the split, Maine sits at a 4-3 overall record so far. They'll finish the series tomorrow, with a single game set for a noontime start.
