Maine's nine-game win streak snapped at Stony Brook

Stony Brook, N.Y. -- In a game which featured 11 lead changes and 10 ties, the University of Maine women's basketball team saw its nine-game win streak come to an end after suffering a 59-54 loss a Stony Brook on Saturday afternoon. The loss slips Maine back to 14-2 on the season and 11-2 in league play.

Anne Simon led all scorers with 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting while Maeve Carroll and Blanca Millan each nearly tabbed double-doubles with 13 points, eight rebounds, and 12 points, seven rebounds, respectively. Millan surpassed another milestone in her historic career as she knocked down her 210th career triple, tying her with Ashley Underwood for third on Maine's all-time list for three-pointers made.

The Black Bears struggled from the floor, going 20-for-62 (32.3) overall including a 4-of-16 mark from three-point range. In a battle between the league's top two defenses, with each ranked in the top-10 in the nation, 36 total turnovers were forced with the Black Bears forcing 19 takeaways with nine steals.

The first half featured back and forth action with seven ties and eight lead changes over the opening 20 minutes of action. Neither team led by more than three through the first and second quarter. A 4-0 run by the Black Bears, with buckets from Millan and a layup in the paint from Fanny Wadling, gave the Black Bears a 16-13 lead with 7:25 left in the second quarter.

An 8-2 run from the Seawolves flipped the script as the hosts took a 22-19 advantage with 2:19 on the clock in the second. Stony Brook would carry a 26-24 edge into the break.

The Black Bears opened the second half on back-to-back buckets from Carroll to regain a two-point advantage.

A 14-2 run from Stony Brook in the third quarter gave the Seawolves their largest lead of the game, 40-30, with 1:23 left in the third.

Maine answered riding the back of Simon who knocked down back-to-back buckets, including a triple, to cut the lead down to five.

With the Seawolves leading by six, Maine was able to put together another 5-0 run. A traditional three-point play from Carroll and a jumper by Millan, brought the Black Bears within one with 6:24 remaining in regulation.

Soon after, two free throws from Simon brought Maine all the way back, tying things at 47-all with 5:07 on the clock.

Stony Brook regained a five point lead with under a minute to play. Maine was forced to foul late, and did so with 27-seconds left. Stony Brook would miss both free throws and Simon had the answer, nailing a triple with 14-seconds on the clock.

However, it would be as close as Maine would get. The Seawolves would escape with a 59-54 victory.

Maine and Stony Brook close the two-game series on Sunday with tipoff set for 2 p.m.
