Black Bears erase 16-point deficit to defeat Stony Brook

Maine outscores Stony Brook 24-10 in fourth quarter

Stony Brook, N.Y. -- The University of Maine women's basketball team, which trailed by as many as 16 at Stony Brook on Sunday afternoon, outscored the Seawolves 24-10 in the fourth quarter to complete a 54-49 road victory at the Island Federal Credit Union Arena.

Maine, which picked up a weekend split with the victory, improves its record to 15-2 overall and 12-2 in America East play as the Black Bears remain at the top of the America East standings. Maine is now 11-2 on the road this season.

Blanca Millan tallied 11 of her game-high 17 points in the fourth quarter while adding five rebounds while matching a season-high with six steals. Maeve Carroll added 16 points and eight rebounds as the senior has now registered double-digits in five of her last six outings.

After going 10-of-36 through the first three quarters, the Black Bears went 9-of-14 (64.3) in the fourth quarter to complete the comeback. Defensively, Maine forced 19 turnovers as it swiped 12 steals, the seventh time this season in which Maine has tallied 10 or more steals.

The Black Bears struggled to find the bucket in the first quarter, finding themselves trailing by 11 after shooting just 2-of-12 in the opening period.

An 8-0 run in the early stages of the second quarter gave Stony Brook its largest lead of the game, 23-7, with 4:59 remaining in the first half.

Maine begin to click late in the second, putting together a 9-1 run to close the first half. A traditional three-point play from Carroll and a jumper by Saar cut the lead to nine before a late bucket from Fanny Wadling sent Maine into the break trailing by eight, 24-16.

The Black Bears were only able to trim the advantage to seven in the third and found themselves down, 39-30, heading into the fourth quarter.

The fourth quarter surge began when Saar dialed up a triple from the top of the key, jump starting an 11-0 run. A layup from Millan of an offensive board by Anne Simon cut the lead to a pair before Millan forced a steal on the next possession, taking the ball the distance for a pair to knot the score at 41-all with 5:59 to play.

Maine would complete the 11-0 sprint with two free throws by Carroll to take its first lead of the content.

Stony Brook would force another tie before Maine responded with a 7-1 sprint to put the game away. A triple from Millan put Maine up four before Carroll, working off an assist from Saar, cashed in for a pair to put Maine on top, 52-46, with 1:22 to play.

The Seawolves were able to pull within three but would come up short on a tying three-point attempt. Millan came down with the defensive board and was fouled. Soon after, Millan hit a pair of free throws to seal the deal as the Black Bears scored their 15th win of the season, 54-49.

Maine continues America East play on Saturday, Feb. 20 when it hosts New Hampshire.
