Orono, Maine -- In a game which featured 18 lead changes and 10 ties, the University of Maine women's basketball team erased a 14-point third quarter deficit, rallying all the way back to force overtime before falling at Army, 87-81, in double overtime.
Four Black Bears posted double-digit scoring totals in the contest, led by
Alba Orois' career-high 21 points, seven assists, and five boards.
Maeve Carroll packed the stat sheet, finishing with 16 points, nine rebounds, six assists, and three blocks while
Anne Simon added 19 points, six rebounds, five assists, and a career-high six steals. For Simon, the point total was her sixth time in double-figures in Maine's first six games.
Bailey Wilborn, the reigning America East Rookie of the Week, tallied a career-high 14 points off the bench; the freshman's third-straight game in double-digits.
Maine posted one of its best offensive showing in the early part of the season, assisting on 22 of its 35 field goals while finishing the game at 48.6 percent from the field.
A 13-0 run by Army saw it build a 27-14 lead early in the second quarter. Maine answered with a 5-0 run, fueled by a triple from Wilborn and a bucket from Orois, but Army's lead would be 10 at the break.
Army built its largest lead of the game, 42-28, midway through the third. Maine would begin its comeback as it put together a 9-2 run, capped by a three from
Sera Hodgson, to trim the lead to seven.
After the Black Knights responded, rebuilding their lead to 12, Maine once again had an answer. The Black Bears were able to put together their longest scoring run of the game with an 13-0 sprint. Simon would work her way inside for two while drawing a foul. After the junior guard completed the three-point play, Wilborn would knock down a triple as Maine trailed by just four entering the fourth quarter.
Olivia Rockwood's triple would start the scoring in the fourth before Orois found Simon for a pair to give Maine its first lead of the second half, 50-49.
Army rallied back to take a four point lead with 3:02 remaining in regulation, but there was no quit in the Black Bears. Maine answered, this time with a 7-0 run, to regain the lead late. Wilborn's triple would end the Army run before buckets from Simon and Orois saw the Black Bears take a 68-65 lead with 1:25 on the clock.
The Black Knights hit a triple late, tying the game with just 30-seconds left. On the next Maine possession, Orois dribbled along the top of the key before slashing to the hoop, cashing in on a reverse layup to give Maine a two point advantage with 2.1 seconds left.
Army would call a timeout, advancing the ball. On the inbound pass, a three-point attempt would fall short but right into the hands of an Army player who quickly put it back up and in, sending the game to overtime.
A 6-0 Maine run early in the first overtime, capped on another driving layup by Orois, gave the visitors a 76-71 lead with 2:09 left in the first overtime.
Army responded with a 5-0 run of its own, tying the game at 77-77 with 34-seconds on the clock. Each team had two chances to win it but both would come up short, sending the game to the second overtime.
Simon slashed through the paint for two midway through the second overtime, giving Maine an 81-79 advantage. However, Maine would not score again in the game as Army finished strong with an 8-0 run to ultimately capture the victory, 87-81.
Maine returns to action on Sunday when it travels to meet Princeton at 1 p.m.
